In der Zeit, bevor ich JRPGs entdeckte, waren Point-and-Click-Abenteuerspiele meine Lieblingsspiele. Von Space Quest und King’s Quest über Full Throttle und The Legend of Kyrandia verbrachte ich viele Tage auf dem PC meiner Mutter (mit seiner revolutionären neuen “Soundkarte”), um Abenteuer zu erleben und Rätsel zu lösen. Als ich in die High School kam, war das Genre weitgehend verschwunden.

Erst kurz nach dem Umzug nach Japan suchte ich in einer Reihe von Heimweh das alte Genre auf. Zu meiner Überraschung fand ich heraus, dass die Liste nach der Liste der “must play point-and-click adventure games” ein Spiel enthielt, von dem ich noch nie in oder in der Nähe der Spitze gehört hatte – obwohl es kein Sierra, Lucas Arts oder Westwood Klassiker war. Dieses Spiel war 1999’s The Longest Journey.

Die längste Reise ist die Geschichte zweier Welten, einer Technologie (Stark-i.e., unsere Welt) und einer Magie (Arcadia), die in einem komplexen Gleichgewicht miteinander verbunden sind. Aber jetzt ist das Gleichgewicht in Gefahr.

Beide Welten sind sehr interessant zu erforschen. Sie werden in zahlreichen spannenden Gesprächen und Beobachtungen konkretisiert. Tatsächlich löst jeder Klick auf ein Hintergrundobjekt eine Reaktion aus dem April aus – einschließlich einer fantastischen kleinen Geschichte über die größte Supermarkt-Werbekampagne aller Zeiten.

Aber so interessant die beiden Welten auch sind, der Star der Show ist April selbst. April ist einfach ein normaler Mensch wie du oder ich. Sie hat keine Fähigkeiten im Umgang mit Waffen. Sie ist kein Hacker. Sie ist nicht besonders stark, zäh oder fit. Sie ist nur eine kämpfende Künstlerin und sonst nichts. So ist es nicht etwas, auf das sie in irgendeiner Weise vorbereitet ist, kopfüber in ein weltumspannendes Abenteuer geworfen zu werden. Doch während sie immer mehr Menschen trifft, die von ihr abhängig sind, tut sie ihr Bestes, um sich der Situation zu stellen – auch wenn sie wirklich nichts anderes will, als wegzulaufen und in ihr langweiliges altes Leben zurückzukehren. Die Art und Weise, wie sie im Laufe ihrer Reise wächst und sich entwickelt, macht sie zu einer der “realistischsten” Charaktere, die ich je im Spiel gesehen habe.
